Introduction
After lights out when young, I often stood by my window staring out at the moon, mesmerized. To this day I still become breathless when sighting her in the night sky.
In 1988, when a relatively new single mother, embroiled in a horrific custody battle, about to return to post graduate studies, launch two part time jobs with lengthy commutes, and newly moved back to the city, I decided I needed a monthly oasis time, a space of restoration, laughter, telling of stories and warmth.
So I called 18 Jewish women and we rented the Center for Wholist Medicine, complete with huge hot tub, to meet monthly for Rosh Chodesh, the new moon.
Just before we were about to gather, it felt clear that we needed a ritual to open and close our time together. So I set about composing, thus launching my Jewish relationship with the moon, the writing of prayer poems deepening this connection.
With time the nuances of the moons emerged more powerfully in my life, gracing it with beauty and moorings. Now a part of my inner clockwork, Rosh Chodesh adds a beat and rthymn to my life, aiding me to keep greater balance and gracing me with wisdom and perspective.
And so I welcome you to the cycle of the moons. Hebrew Date Converter |
